Dr. Kinsella provides an overview of the shifts in emphasis with academic speaking and writing instruction and assessment initiated by the Common Core Standards and the new ELA/ELD Framework. She will clarify the differences between merely assigning routine writing tasks and acting as an engaged and informed mentor who introduces and unpacks a writing model, explicitly teaches related language and rhetorical conventions, and guides drafting and revision. She analyzes the linguistic and rhetorical competencies required for students to adeptly respond to text when justifying an evidence-based claim with viable citations. She demonstrates classroom-tested instructional routines to integrate brief but potent doses of academic speaking and writing support. Participants leave with practical print and digital resources and model lessons to implement these instructional routines school-wide.

Participants will learn effective ways to:

  • Review well-written language objectives addressing lesson writing demands
  • Introduce and unpack a model paper exemplifying the elements of a CCSS-aligned writing type (narrative, opinion, informative, argument, summary-response)
  • Provide a student-friendly analytical rubric that specifies the attributes of the writing type
  • Frontload rhetorical conventions and academic language for specific writing types
  • Structure brief, daily doses of academic speaking and writing to build foundational competencies for extended responses
  • Utilize pre-reading and post-reading questions to formulate brief academic writing tasks
  • Guide students in making critical distinctions between casual and precise word choices
  • Facilitate productive peer feedback sessions targeting appropriate rubric criteria
  • Provide productive feedback and targeted lessons on priority writing errors
